The toothbrush test for Chat GPT-4
Larry page famously came up with the “Toothbrush test” for building product at Google i.e. build products that can be used at least twice per day by users. subtext is that more frequent the product is used, possibly higher the value it generates for the user.
E.g. Food (survival), bathing/washing (disease free, socially pleasant), clothes (protection, socially pleasant).
In a short span, GPT-4 has aced the toothbrush test for me and many users. GPT-4 seems to be crushing product goals and shares attributes with other dominating products.
‘Toothbrush test: I used it at least 3-4 times everyday now. In fact, I had forgotten which google founder had coined the term “toothbrush test”. I GPT’ed it - I didn’t Google it.
Mobile Home Screen Barrier: I have GPT-4 on my home screen on my Iphone. Every year 1m+ apps are released and less than 0.01% make it to people’s downloaded list. GPT-4 isn’t an app, still had a bookmark on my homescreen. Big win.
The reversibility test: Most great products also have this inane quality that once you experience them, the old ways seem fraught and suddenly highly sub-optimal. I believe Uber vs taxi, Electricity vs kerosene, Flying somewhere in few hours vs ship taking weeks etc. Once you experience the new, you want to live in this future because past feels fraught with issues. Suddenly, I find google searches so sub-optimal and few months ago - I didn’t - I used to think google was the best a search can get. Search with GPT-4 is way better.
10x better: I spent 2 hours researching some simple answers on Google about LLC formation, capital infusion and compliance laws and felt extremely frustrated with lack of clear answers just a bunch of SEO optimized legal services post which offer no clear answers and eventually will guide you towards consultation. GPT-4 was able to get me to the right answers, point me to the sources on Franchise Tax Board site and even draft a legal agreement for a structure I needed. I felt I had a powerful legal and financial assistant at my disposal - which was the job-to-be-done not reading SEO optimized posts. GPT-4 for many uses cases is just 10x better.
Our generation’s industrial revolution moment is here. 1800 - Agriculture was 75% of GDP and services was less than 10%. In 2020, 1% is agriculture and 82% is services. Future will look very different is for certain.
